A Tiny Treasure Chest, A Big Milestone & A Needed Reminder

I pulled into the garage with a backseat filled with grocery bags at the same time my mom pulled up to our house with Peanut & Pumpkin in the car with her. As I pulled the key out of the ignition & opened my door, I could hear the girls’ squeals as they ran up the driveway toward me.

I didn’t even get my left leg all the way out of the car before Peanut got to the door & said “GUESS WHAT, MOM?!?!?!”

And in that instant, as I looked at her little face looking up at mine, I started to tear up.

Right there with one leg barely out of the car door & the Blue Bell starting to melt in the backseat, I saw my baby grow up.

My girl lost her first tooth (while she should have been napping) at school! The joy that sweet girl had in opening up that tiny little plastic treasure chest to show me her tooth (“Don’t worry, mom, it’s not bleeding anymore!”)… that joy was the sweetest, most pure, most radiant kind of joy!

I can’t even tell you how many times I told her right there in the garage that I can’t believe she’s growing up so fast. At dinner, we were naturally talking about her lost tooth, and again I said she was growing up too fast. I asked “Who told you that you could grow up so fast?!”

My sweet girl didn’t skip a beat… she just grinned that freshly-gapped grin, and enthusiastically pointed upward. “God did, Mom!”

“You’re right, baby. God did.” is all I could say as my eyes started to get misty again.

She is thankful for the excitement of a lost tooth and the promise of a visit from the tooth fairy.

I am so, so thankful for the gift of watching my girl grow up, and for the reminder at the dinner table that while there are a lot of days that I feel like I’m failing as a mom, I’m not doing half bad. I’m thankful for the reminder that God has His plan for us & it will unfold at His pace – we don’t need to try to grasp onto control…

We just need to embrace it as it comes. Just enjoy that tiny little plastic treasure chest & all the gifts & lessons held inside.
