Investing in Ourselves

Why is it that we I have such a hard time investing in ourselves?

We pour ourselves into others. Into tasks at work. Into our friendships and into the issues our friends are facing. We pour ourselves into our children. Into supporting our spouses and their dreams. We pour ourselves into the not-at-all glamorous household duties that keep life running.

So why do we have such a hard time investing in ourselves?

I am sooooo guilty of this. Perfect example being the way I felt after taking the leap and buying the loooooooooooong over due camera upgrade.

Racing heartbeat.

Knot in my stomach.

Doubt in my mind.

Sweat on my palms.

Buyer’s remorse – kind of. I knew I’d earned it. I knew it probably should have happened much much sooner. But there I was, having to try to convince myself that I’m worth it. That the investment is right on track with me, my talent, my future. That it wasn’t something outlandish or risky. It certainly wasn’t cheap, but it was an investment in me.

This isn’t the first time this has happened, but it was the first time I really thought about why I was feeling that way. It wasn’t just sticker shock. It was a symptom of my own self-doubt.

This got me thinking – it’s amazing how often we do this on a regular basis. It may not be something on this kind of scale, but I think we tend to put off investing in ourselves.

Maybe you’ve thought about taking a class but tell yourself you don’t have the time and it would be better to save the money. It’s not going to really be that big of a deal anyway.

Maybe you’ve been wanting to take a few days off of work to just relax, but you tell yourself there’s way too much to be done and you can just take that time later. You’ll be fine just pushing through the busy without taking the time off.

Maybe you’ve been hoping for just an hour relaxation with a massage. Better to save the money and not just splurge on something silly.

But really, let’s look at those things – they’re all ways to invest in yourself. They’re ways to continue to build your mind. They’re ways to relieve your stress so that you can turn around and be even more productive. They’re ways to take care of the body you use to pour yourself into everyone else.

We’ve got to start allowing ourselves, if not even requiring ourselves to really put investing in ourselves as a priority rather than something that gives us sweaty palms and a hoard of butterflies in our stomachs. It’s ok to take time, money and effort to make yourself better. To push yourself ahead.

This isn’t going to be an easy habit to break, especially for me, but I think it’s one that’s worth working on… So let’s do this together y’all. What’s one way you could invest in  yourself that you’ve been putting off? Put it in the comments and I’ll help encourage you to take the leap!

P.S. The image above is designed as an iPhone background for you to use for FREE! It’s sized for the iPhone 4, but here’s a size for the 5 and for the 6 as well. Enjoy!
