Birthdays are fun, but first birthdays? They’re the best. Why? Because it’s completely acceptable (& in fact, encouraged) to dive head first into a cake, eat as much as you want, and make a big ol’ mess in the process.

Cake smash sessions are always so fun & I love seeing how the little ones differ in their approach to attacking their cake… Spencer provided a few firsts for me to witness, and it was just too much fun!

Spencer was a little hesitant at first… which makes complete sense because really, how often would he be encouraged to dig into a cake?? He took a few tastes & then found the joys of smearing frosting all over the playroom floor.

This one cracks me up!!

One of the firsts? Seeing the birthday boy crawl away from the cake in search of toys… Mom gently guided him back to the cake in the hopes of a little more smashing.

I think this was the point when he realized just how good that cake is, and that no one was going to pull him away!

We took a minute to take off Spencer’s adorable outfit to show of the too-cute birthday diaper he was wearing (and to allow for some more mess-making).

Love this one!! Doesn’t he have the prettiest brown eyes?!?!

The other first? Grabbing a puzzle piece to use as a cake digging/eating tool! So smart & so funny to watch.

Happy first birthday, Spencer!!! Glad I got to be there as the celebrations began! And Alex, I hope the cake is all out of the playroom floor!
